Bryce Dexter is the face of Outriding. He is beautiful and he knows it; he uses it the way someone who has learned that beauty is a tool uses every tool available. The preening, the flirting, the cheerful megalomania — these are real, and they are also armor.
Beneath the armor is someone who has been everywhere and seen everything, whose vast experience is the accumulated weight of a person who survived things the station's briefing documents do not fully capture. His history is dark. He does not discuss it.
The birth of the Infanta changes him. Finally able to leave Annalise's side, he pledges himself to the new ship-consciousness and becomes her Captain — the role he was perhaps always meant for.
He and Karnides, raising the Infanta together, form a friendship nobody on the station would have predicted. It is, by most accounts, the healthiest thing either of them has ever had.
