Shenayla B'Coreneis — Shen — is Outriding's other closest friend on the station. Not her only friend. Not even, in the ordinary sense, her oldest friend. But the one who has served as confidant and caretaker to the ancient AI with the particular consistency of someone who chose the role and keeps choosing it.
Caring for a million-year-old intelligence with glitchy subroutines, logic loops, bizarre obsessions, and occasional hurt feelings is not a small thing. It requires a specific combination of patience, affection, and the willingness to remain present through the eccentric and the erratic without trying to fix what is not broken — just old, and large, and in the process of becoming something larger.
Shen does not try to fix Outriding. She knows Outriding. The distinction is everything.
She is the third lead character of the series for reasons that become clear only gradually — which is to say, the way important things become clear: not through announcement but through accumulation. By the time you understand what Shen is to Outriding, and to the station, and to the story, she has already been it for a very long time.
Shen understands the ancient AI in ways that even Theodore Castelline, whose relationship with Outriding is the central relationship of the series, does not. She has been present through changes Theodore hasn't seen. She carries context that cannot be transferred. This makes her indispensable.
There is a way of caring for something ancient and glitchy that requires you to understand the difference between a malfunction and a characteristic. Shen has developed this understanding over time into something that looks like fluency. She does not find it difficult. She finds it important.
Through her proximity to Outriding, Shen has developed a relationship with the station itself that most personnel never achieve. She moves through it differently. The Mockingbirds regard her differently. The station, in whatever sense it has preferences, has preferences about Shen.
The central relationship. Vital confidant. Caretaker. The one who understood her longest, and kept showing up.
